A close call due to malfunction in rental gear

Sitting in a speed boat, my dive buddy and I were looking forward to the dive waiting for us at the end of the somewhat rough ride across the waters around Muscat, Oman. We were headed for Three Sisters,  a popular dive site in the Ad Dimaniyat Islands Nature Reserve.

There were five of us — a young couple, the dive guide and us — entered the water and started the dive. I was wearing dive gear that I had rented from the dive operator. It was agreed that we would follow a coral wall and then turn back based on air consumption. The young couple was consuming air much faster than us and the dive guide signaled us asking if we would like to continue on our own for the rest of the dive. The conditions being perfect and the route easy to follow, we gave an ok.

We continued a few more minutes before turning back to return to the boat. Some 10 minutes before reaching the boat I suddenly realized that I am not getting air even though I had just checked the pressure gauge, which had been reading over 80 bar. Training kicked in and I swam to my buddy to get the octopus before we ascended to the surface in a surprisingly orderly fashion.

On the surface, I had to inflate the BCD by blowing air in it. Neither the octopus nor the normal regulator worked. After a few attempts the air started to flow through the regulator; first intermittently and then in quite a normal fashion.

A few minutes later we had swam to the boat. I told the dive crew what had happened, recommended servicing the faulty regulator set and required a new set for the subsequent dive. I found it a bit unnerving that they did not acknowledge the seriousness of what had happened in any way. I can only hope that this indifference was not due to them feeling that this was business as usual.

In retrospect I have been trying to identify if I could have avoided the whole situation by doing something differently.  Selecting a reputable dive operator and checking the rented gear thoroughly before the dive were not enough this time. Any thoughts anyone?

I never found out what was the root cause of the malfunction but I suspect it was corrosion or dirt in the first stage. While researching the topic I came across of an article that describes a similar experience and a potential explanation: “Weird , Near death causing stuff in regulator!!!”.

Scuba Diving and Camping in Key Largo

Palm trees, ship wrecks, and seafood galore are just a few of the things that describe the Florida Keys. Surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic, this 120-mile long island chain is home to the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States and the third largest barrier reef in the world. As if this wasn’t enough, the Keys are also home to the Florida Keys shipwreck trail and dozens of dive shops.

Diving Holidays: Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean and known as one of world’s luxury holiday destinations.

Diving

There is a variety of different dive sites on the west coast and on the coast in north-east suitable for divers at all levels of experience.

If you are looking to dive a lot, I recommend finding a hotel in or near the town of Flic-en-Flac on the west coast. The waters on the west coast are more calm than in north-east, where it is not uncommon that you cannot dive because of the high wind and rough waters.

Relax at Aquarium dive site

Aquarium is one of the most enjoyable dive sites in the west: There is an abundance of species of fish and coral to observe. The rocks and boulders are typical of the waters around Mauritius: It is hard to find similar shapes elsewhere. The Aquarium dive takes you to about 20 meters.

Visit L’èveillé dive site for a unique experience

In the west, you may want to visit L’èveillé — the exact spelling of the name of the site varies a bit depending on whom you ask — where you can find a cliff and a 10 meter wall. The dive is quite deep, 28-29 meters.

One of the high-lights is a combination of a tunnel and a chimney that you can dive through. You approach the tunnel entry near the bottom and dive under a huge rock formation. Only then you can see the wide tunnel that leads you to the chimney.  Be careful because there may be a lot of sea life in the chimney including an occasional lion fish.

Wild ride at Belle Mare Passage dive site

If you are looking for a wild ride and are an experienced diver, you should visit Belle Mare Passage. The site’s nick name, “Dishwasher” gives you some idea of what the dive is alike.

You enter the water in a lagoon and quite soon get caught by the tidal currents. At depth of few meters, you are swept along  through narrow canyons and crevaces. In some spots you may be able to hold on to rocks to observe the fish and quite alien looking rock formations before your grip fails. As you can guess, protective gloves are recommended and provided by the dive centers.

Dive Centers

There are several high quality dive centers on the island.

On the west coast you may want to visit Sun Divers http://www.sundiversmauritius.com/.

In the north-east region you may want to contact your hotel to ask about diving opportunities.  Many reputable dive centers operate in or with the hotels.

Getting there

Prepare for a long flight through Paris, Dubai or a major Indian airport depending on which direction you arrive.

It takes 1-2 hours to get from the airport to most hotels depending on where it is on the island.

Scuba Diving Racha Yai

This highly personal account from Racha Yai, Thailand captures the thrill and excitement of scuba diving at its best

Source: tracyjeanmills.blogspot.fi

One thing I was excited to do in Thailand was go scuba diving! It’s not very often that I get to scuba dive and I had heard that Thailand was one of the top places in the world to do it. I told everyone in the group to get certified before our trip so we could all go. Regardless of what any of them did… I was going. Daniel was the only one that ended up getting certified before we left so we were both pumped to go! Ellis ended up coming with us and doing “Discover Scuba” which is a crash course on scuba diving and you stay with your own Dive Master the whole time (which is why he isn’t in many of our pictures. It ended up being a little rainy while we were there, but we were still able to go. We were pumped!
